چکیده
361 Figure 1. Log-log plot of the variance at a given scale, vs. that scale (similar to the power spectrum or a 2nd order structure function). It shows (scale-invariant) ARM cloud liquid water path data plus two computed radiation fields, IPA (“simple theory”) and MC (“better theory”). The MC curve, showing a scale break at the “radiative smoothing scale” 0 . 200-300 m for marine Sc, agrees with Landsat observations. The IPA curve depends entirely on vertical liquid water path and thus is slaved to it, showing no scale break. Analyses of Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) program’s Enhanced Shortwave Experiment (ARESE) multiple data sets for studying cloud absorption
Following the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Enhanced Shortwave Experiment (ARESE), some studies reported a cloud absorption anomaly (CAA) of unprecedented magnitude. The largest discrepancy was found on a heavy overcast day (October 30, 1995) when cloud absorptance inferred from aircraft observations was 37% of the incoming solar irradiance, almost twice that of model calculations. Th...
متن کاملValidation of surface retrieved cloud optical properties with in situ measurements at the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement Program (ARM) South Great Plains site
[1] Cloud optical properties inferred from a multifilter rotating shadowband radiometer have been validated against in situ measurements during the second ARM Enhanced Shortwave Experiment (ARESE II) field campaign at the ARM South Great Plains (SGP) site. On the basis of eight aircraft in situ vertical profiles (constructed from measurements), Forward Spectra Scattering Probe (FSSP), we find t...
متن کاملA spectral method for retrieving cloud optical thickness and effective radius from surface-based transmittance measurements
We introduce a new spectral method for the retrieval of optical thickness and effective radius from cloud transmittance that relies on the spectral slope of the normalized transmittance between 1565 nm and 1634 nm, and on cloud transmittance at a visible wavelength. The standard dual-wavelength technique, which is traditionally used in reflectance-based retrievals, is ill-suited for transmittan...
متن کاملCloud droplet size and liquid water path retrievals from zenith radiance measurements: examples from the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement Program and the Aerosol Robotic Network
The ground-based Atmospheric Radiation Measurement Program (ARM) and NASA Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) routinely monitor clouds using zenith radiances at visible and near-infrared wavelengths. Using the transmittance calculated from such measurements, we have developed a new retrieval method for cloud effective droplet size and conducted extensive tests for non-precipitating liquid water c...
متن کاملInfluence of aerosols on the shortwave cloud radiative forcing from North Pacific oceanic clouds: Results from the Cloud Indirect Forcing Experiment (CIFEX)
[1] Aerosols over the Northeastern Pacific Ocean enhance the cloud drop number concentration and reduce the drop size for marine stratocumulus and cumulus clouds. These microphysical effects result in brighter clouds, as evidenced by a combination of aircraft and satellite observations. In-situ measurements from the Cloud Indirect Forcing Experiment (CIFEX) indicate that the mean cloud drop num...
